Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate the fuel cost of any trip.

in-browser

Price is per litre, in any currency — the total comes back in the same currency. mpg is US miles per US gallon. Distance and efficiency may mix unit systems.

Fuel used (litres) 16
Total cost 28.8

How to use

  1. 1 Enter the trip distance and choose km or miles.
  2. 2 Enter your fuel efficiency and choose l/100km or mpg.
  3. 3 Enter the fuel price per litre.
  4. 4 Read the fuel used and total cost, and copy either.

About Fuel Cost Calculator

The Fuel Cost Calculator works out how much fuel a journey will burn and what it will cost.

Enter the trip distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency and the price of fuel, and it returns the litres of fuel used and the total cost.

Distance can be in kilometres or miles, and efficiency in either litres per 100 km or US miles per gallon, so you can use whatever figures your dashboard and your country actually quote.

The reason this is fiddly to do in your head is the unit-juggling.

Efficiency might be quoted as l/100km in Europe or mpg in the US, distance in km or miles, and fuel priced per litre or per gallon — and mpg works the opposite way round to l/100km, where a bigger number is better.

This tool normalises everything internally to kilometres and litres per 100 km, then computes fuel used as distance divided by a hundred, multiplied by the efficiency, and finally the cost.

To keep things unambiguous it expects the fuel price per litre and returns the total in that same currency, whatever it is.

Use it to budget a road trip, compare the running cost of two cars, or split fuel money fairly with passengers.

The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so your journeys and spending stay on your device, and it works offline.

FAQ

Should the fuel price be per litre or per gallon?

Per litre. The result is in the same currency you enter. If your pump price is per gallon, divide it by the litres in a gallon (about 3.785 US) first.

Can I mix miles with l/100km?

Yes. Distance and efficiency units are independent, so you can combine any pairing — the tool converts everything to a common basis internally.

Is mpg US or UK?

US miles per US gallon. A UK gallon is larger, so UK mpg figures are higher for the same real efficiency; convert them before entering if needed.
