About Sales Tax Calculator

The Sales Tax Calculator works in both directions: add tax to a pre-tax (net) amount to get the gross total, or strip tax out of a tax-inclusive (gross) amount to recover the net price and the tax portion.

Pick a mode, enter the amount and the tax rate as a percent, and it shows the tax and the other figure rounded to two decimal places.

Both calculations come up constantly.

Adding tax is what you do when a price is quoted net and you need the total a customer actually pays.

Removing tax is the trickier one — it is not simply taking the same percentage off, because the tax was charged on the smaller net amount, not the gross.

To reverse it correctly you divide the gross by one plus the rate, which is exactly what this tool does.

That makes it reliable for filling in invoices, reclaiming VAT, or checking how much of a receipt total was tax.

It works for any rate, so it covers sales tax, VAT, GST and similar consumption taxes anywhere in the world.

The add and remove modes round-trip exactly, and everything runs locally in your browser with nothing uploaded.

FAQ

Why can I not just subtract the percentage to remove tax?

Because the tax was charged on the net amount, not the gross. To reverse it you divide the gross by one plus the rate, which recovers the original net price exactly.

Does this work for VAT and GST as well as sales tax?

Yes. The maths is the same for any consumption tax expressed as a percentage, so it covers VAT, GST and sales tax at any rate.
