About Percentage Change Calculator

Percentage Change Calculator works out how much a value has gone up or down in percentage terms between an original figure and a new one.

You enter the starting value and the new value, and the tool instantly reports the signed percentage change, whether that is an increase or a decrease, along with the raw numeric difference between the two.

The formula it uses is the standard one: the difference divided by the absolute value of the original, multiplied by one hundred.

This is the calculation behind countless everyday questions.

How much did a price rise from last month to this month? What growth rate did revenue show between two quarters? By how much did a measurement drop after a change? Because the result is signed, a positive number means growth and a negative number means a fall, and the accompanying difference makes the absolute movement clear too.

The tool handles negative starting values sensibly by basing the percentage on the magnitude of the original.

If the original value is zero, percentage change is mathematically undefined, so the tool explains that rather than returning a misleading figure.

Everything is computed locally in your browser as you type, with results formatted using your locale, so calculations are instant, private and work offline.

FAQ

How is percentage change calculated?

It is (new − old) divided by the absolute value of old, times 100. A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease.

Why can’t the original value be zero?

Dividing by zero is undefined, so a percentage change from zero has no meaningful value. The tool flags this instead of showing a wrong answer.
