About Protect / Unlock PDF

The Protect / Unlock PDF tool gives you two honest, browser-side operations built on what pdf-lib can actually do.

The Unlock mode loads a PDF — supplying the open password if you have one — and writes back a clean, unencrypted copy you can freely edit, print and copy from, which is the everyday fix when an old export carries owner restrictions that block harmless changes.

If the file needs a password to open, enter it and the tool rebuilds an unlocked version from the decrypted content.

The Mark ownership mode records an author/owner and a short usage note in the document metadata, producing a soft deterrent that travels with the file and shows up in document properties.

This is deliberately not dressed up as security: pdf-lib cannot apply real password encryption, so we do not pretend to.

A metadata mark discourages casual reuse and documents who owns the file, but it does not lock or encrypt it — for true confidentiality you would need a dedicated encryption tool.

Both modes run entirely in your browser with pdf-lib, so the document is never uploaded, and you always download a fresh copy while the original is left untouched.

Use Unlock to free up a restricted file you own, and Mark ownership to stamp authorship onto drafts and shared copies.

Only use these tools on PDFs you have the right to modify.

FAQ

Can this password-protect or encrypt my PDF?

No. pdf-lib cannot apply real encryption, so we do not claim to. Mark ownership only records metadata as a soft deterrent; for true encryption use a dedicated tool.

How does Unlock work?

It loads the PDF (with your open password if needed) and re-saves an unencrypted copy, clearing owner restrictions that were blocking edits, printing or copying.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed with pdf-lib entirely in your browser, so the document never leaves your device.
